We use a capacity lens to explore how organisational conditions influence what people and teams can mobilise in practice. Reviews consider demands, available resources, work design, decision authority, recovery and the ways people may be compensating for system limitations.
Physical capacity concerns the energy, health, fatigue and recovery required to meet the demands of work. We examine how schedules, workload, task demands, environmental conditions and recovery opportunities influence safe and sustainable performance.
This concerns attention, emotional regulation, confidence, judgement, sense-making and decision quality. We explore how pressure, interruption, uncertainty, information load and organisational climate affect the capacity to think and act effectively.
Team capacity concerns trust, communication, psychological safety, shared understanding, coordination and mutual support. We examine whether teams have the relationships, information and authority required to coordinate and adapt under changing conditions.
This concerns the resources, authority, flexibility, learning and governance needed to respond effectively to change. We examine whether systems enable appropriate adaptation or leave people compensating without sufficient support or control
Coming soon as part of our applied research.
Our work brings together completed doctoral research, peer-reviewed publications, applied organizational experience, and a continuing program of inquiry into Human Capacity.
The purpose of the research practice is not simply to publish ideas. It is to develop useful knowledge that helps organisations understand the conditions affecting risk, wellbeing, human performance and sustainable execution.
Dr Brent Halliday’s doctoral research examined how workplace health, safety and wellbeing can be integrated with corporate strategy. It explored organisational context, leadership, employee engagement, strategy, governance and performance measurement, providing the established foundation for Upside’s advisory work.
The resulting framework offers an evidence-informed basis for considering workplace health, safety and wellbeing as interconnected strategic concerns. It supports advisory work in strategy development, governance, leadership, engagement, integration and performance measurement.
Upside’s published work contributes to the evidence base connecting health, safety, wellbeing and corporate strategy. Research publications, presentations and practitioner papers are made accessible to leaders seeking practical, evidence-informed approaches to organisational challenges.
Human Capacity Research Series
The Human Capacity Research Series translates the developing proposition into accessible discussion papers for boards, leaders and practitioners. Topics include:
The developing Human Capacity research extends the completed doctoral work by examining how organisational conditions affect what people and teams can mobilise under real operating conditions. The provisional framework considers capacity as dynamic and context-sensitive, with potential implications for decision quality, speaking up, coordination, safe adaptation, engagement, energy and sustainable performance.
Upside welcomes collaboration with organisations, researchers and professional bodies interested in advancing knowledge about strategic risk, organisational wellbeing and Human Capacity.
Potential partnerships may include:
Research partnerships are designed with appropriate attention to ethics, confidentiality, evidence quality and the developing status of the Human Capacity Framework.
